How to Cut Your Floorball Stick – Step by Step

To get the most out of your game, it’s important to have a floorball stick with the right length. A stick that is too long can affect both technique and control, and sometimes it may be necessary to shorten the shaft to better suit you. Floorball shafts are available in lengths from 92 cm and up.

In this guide, we’ll show you step by step how to easily customize your stick to optimize both feel and performance on the court.

Step 1: Measure and determine the correct length

Before cutting your stick, you need to know which length suits you best. A simple guideline is to stand with the stick in front of you – it should reach a few centimeters above your navel.  We recommend that you first try to buy a stick in the correct length. For younger players, it’s important to consider future growth to avoid cutting the stick too short.

Step 2: Mark where to cut the stick

Once you have decided on the correct length, use a piece of tape or a pen to mark where you want to cut the shaft. Make sure to do this on a flat surface and ensure the marking is straight to achieve a clean cut. Always cut the stick at the top of the shaft.

Step 3: Cut the shaft

Before you start cutting, remove both the knob and the grip tape from the top of the shaft. Save the knob, as it will be reattached after cutting. The grip tape should be discarded and replaced with a new one after shortening the shaft.

What type of saw should I use?

To cut the shaft, use a fine-toothed saw, such as a hacksaw. Place the stick firmly on a stable surface and saw slowly and carefully to avoid cracks or uneven cuts. After cutting, use a file to smooth the edges so nothing catches when applying the new grip tape. Once the edges are smooth enough, reattach the knob. If it’s difficult to put back on, you can use some heat to make installation easier.

The knob may be stuck – a tip is to heat it slightly to make it easier to remove.

Make sure to keep the old knob so you can reuse it.

Step 4: Reapply the grip tape

After cutting the stick, we recommend that you apply a new grip tape, as the old one is often difficult to reattach properly. If you want to reuse the old grip, heating it slightly can help it slide on more easily. Make sure to wrap the grip tightly and evenly without wrinkles or loose areas.

Common questions

How long can a floorball stick be?

According to Swedish regulations, a stick may not be longer than 105 cm in shaft length (excluding the blade). It’s important to stay within this limit to ensure the stick is approved for official matches.

By following these steps carefully and considering your personal needs, you can customize your floorball stick for the best possible playing experience.
